First Replacement Heater Bundle Built in Lynchburg

Framatome ANP completed the fabrication of a replacement “Degasifier Effluent Cooler” heat exchanger bundle for Dominion’s Millstone Unit 2 Power Station. This is a safety-related ASME Section III component. The “Degasifier Effluent Cooler” provides heat removal from the primary demineralizers, utilizing the reactor closed cooling water system. The bundle will be installed in a future outage to replace the existing unit that has a number of degraded tubes.

The entire component, machining and assembly work was completed in the Lynchburg manufacturing facility. Framatome ANP’s experience with steam generators and other shell and tube heat exchangers was instrumental in the successful completion of the project. This was the first heat exchanger bundle built in Lynchburg, demonstrating a new service that Framatome ANP can offer. As power plant components continue to age, it will be necessary to replace heat exchanger bundles to assure safe and efficient operation. Framatome ANP’s ASME Section III QA program makes the company one of the few companies capable of supplying such components.

Lynchburg: Full-scale Bridges Ready for Training

Framatome ANP, Inc. has successfully integrated the former Washington Group International’s Equipment and Services Division into its operations following its purchase in July 2002. Within Framatome ANP, this group is now known as Stearns-Roger™ Services (SRS). SRS provides field service support, as well as the design and installation of refueling system modifications and upgrades. They also provide technical support services for refueling equipment and replacement parts. The company originally supplied approximately 60% of the nuclear fuel handling systems operating in US nuclear power plants.

SRS, which provides refueling equipment for both BWR and PWR plants, recently supplied two full-scale bridges to the new Framatome ANP Technical Training Center. This facility will provide hands-on experience for both Framatome ANP employees and students, and will qualify workers from the German and French regions to US standards and cross train Framatome ANP employees. Additionally, these full-scale bridges will provide the design team SRS a real life test bed for new modifications and upgrades and will allow customers to perform ‘live’ testing of their upgrades prior to installation at their facility in a full scale ‘wet’ environment.
